Lagos State contingent at the just concluded National Sports Festival was adjudged the fifth best team of the just concluded Edo 2020 National Sports Festival held in Benin City, Edo State after winning 126 medals in the course of the thirteen days national competition.

After a keenly contested festival, Team Lagos won a total of 32 gold, 40 silver and 54 bronze medals, trailing behind the winner of the Edo 2020, Delta State which won 158 gold, 116 silver and 110 bronze with the host state, Edo coming second with 129 gold, 104 silver and 108 bronze. Team Bayelsa are in the third position with 54 gold, 56 silver and 58 bronze medals, while Team Rivers are fourth with 33 gold, 34 silver 51 bronze medals.

The Executive Chairman of Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr, Sola Aiyepeku commended the performance of Team Lagos, who are mostly young and budding athletes. He added that “the main thing for us at the Lagos State Sports Commission is developmental and we are happy that we are focused on these athletes gradual all-round development for a better future to represent not just themselves, but the state and the country.

Aiyepeku assured the athletes of better treatment in Lagos to appreciate and reward their loyalty, adding that the state believes in giving the athletes the opportunity to exhibit their talents without giving them the pressure to win at all costs.

The Chairman cautioned states across the federation to desist from win at all cost syndrome which is harmful to an attractive and robust competition and more importantly a bad omen to the development of athletes and sports in Nigeria.

P.M. EXPRESS reports that Team Lagos showed consistent strength in some sports which produced good results at the just concluded Edo 2020 NSF, among which is boxing, taekwondo, women’s basketball and others.

The 29th National Sports Festival was declared closed by the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare in a closing ceremony attended by the host Governor, Godwin Obaseki, the Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, former Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung and other dignitaries on Wednesday night..
