In Showmax’s Kabiyesi, power isn’t just inherited, it’s schemed for, fought over, and, sometimes, stolen in the dead of night.

Set in the heart of Oyo-Ile, the series takes us deep into a world where heroes aren’t always what they seem. But in a world where loyalty is a mere illusion and betrayal is currency, the real battle for the throne is just beginning.

As soon as it seems like Oyo-Ile has finally found its saviour, episodes 6 and 7 deliver a gut-wrenching twist, as Bashorun (Patrick Diabuah) is revealed as the mastermind behind it all. What seemed like a heroic act of saving the kingdom by killing Adetoro (Olajide Ibitoye) is revealed to be part of his carefully orchestrated plan to take over Oyo Ile.

Just as he is on the brink of claiming the crown, fate takes an unexpected turn, threatening to ruin all the evil mastermind he has carefully built.

Princess Aderiyife (Annetta Adebusuyi) and Queen Adelewa (Oluwakemi Oladeojo) return to the palace after many years, bringing with them the queen’s newborn son, who is considered the true heir to the throne. Although everyone celebrates their arrival, Bashorun is rattled and immediately tries to stir doubts by questioning the baby’s paternity. His plan is truncated after the village priest confirms the child’s legitimacy. With that, the chiefs abandoned their plan to crown Bashorun and declared Queen Adelewa regent until the boy was old enough to rule.

But if there’s one thing we’ve learnt, it’s that evil does not accept defeat easily. Instead of surrendering, Bashorun plays the long game, pretending to accept the chiefs’ decision while secretly plotting with his remaining loyalists. With everyone in line to the throne in danger, we can’t help but anticipate the moment Bashorun’s schemes come to light.

Richly steeped in Yoruba culture, Kabiyesi is not just a historical drama; it’s a gripping saga of power, betrayal, and survival.

The storytelling is intense, the performances are stellar, and every episode leaves you yearning for more.

Catch up on the quest for power in Kabiyesi, streaming exclusively on Showmax.
