It was a historic and colourful event at the Eze Imo Palace, Owerri, as dignitaries from across Nigeria gathered to celebrate the 25th coronation anniversary of His Royal Highness, Eze Dr. E. C. Okeke CFR, the revered Chairman of the Imo State and South East Council of Traditional Rulers (Eze Udo II of Amaifeke Ancient Kingdom).
The highpoint of the ceremony was the conferment of the prestigious chieftaincy title of Ikenga Igboland on High Chief Johnbosco Chukwuma Ozigbu, Ph.D (Ogwuaga of Ogwuaga) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the socio-economic advancement of Igbo land, unwavering commitment to community development and cultural preservation.
Speaking at the event, Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State emphasized the importance of supporting traditional institutions, noting that they remain pillars of growth, unity, and peace in society.
“Our traditional institutions must be supported and encouraged to continue delivering their vital, contributory role in sustaining growth and cohesion in our society”, the Governor said.
He further commended HRM Eze Dr. E. C. Okeke, CFR, for his exemplary leadership and expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who was ably represented by the Honourable Minister of Works, Senator David Nweze Umahi CON, describing his presence as “a true testament to Mr. President’s respect for tradition and heritage”.
In his acceptance speech which was captured by a Nigerian serial media entrepreneur and publisher of 4th Estate Reporters — High Chief Johnbosco Chukwuma Ozigbu, Ph.D (Ogwuaga of Ogwuaga, Ala Omajiji of Igboland), dedicated the title of Ikenga Igboland to the Igbo people, pledging to continue championing causes that promote unity, progress, and cultural values in the South East.
“This honour is not for me alone but for every son and daughter of Igbo land committed to building a greater future for our people”, he remarked amidst thunderous applause.
Ikenga, according to Igbo scholars, is a spiritual and philosophical emblem that holds deep meaning in the heart of every true Igbo son and daughter. It is the embodiment of strength, achievement, and the indomitable will to succeed.
The event featured vibrant cultural displays, traditional music, and royal processions, leaving a lasting impression on attendees and reinforcing the enduring relevance of traditional institutions in modern governance.
