To many young technocrats who are interested in public service, Tokunbo Phillip Wahab has become a beacon of inspiration.

With the shortest time that this suave gentleman took up the task as a public officer in Lagos State —first as Special Adviser on Education and now Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources— he has unarguably turned one of Nigeria’s most admired figures.

Known to be a hardworking individual who takes his job seriously, Wahab —fondly called TW by friends— has proved to be an asset to the Sanwo-Olu administration with evidence of the capacity to deliver good governance.

The top-flight Corporate Lawyer now a public officer initially made his mark in the educational sector in the state and, more recently, in charge of the environment where he has initiated a series of transformative measures aimed at revitalising Lagos’ environment and conserving its precious resources.

Under his leadership as Commissioner, Lagosians are witnessing a renaissance – a resurgence of pride in their city and its potentials. As a shrewd politician and strategist, Wahab believes that true power lies not in dominion but in devotion. He is a friend to many, a brother to more, and a quiet force behind so many triumphs that will never grace the news.

Greatness is truly measured not by what one accumulates but by what one gives. In this respect, Wahab shines ever so brightly. There is a warmth to him that disarms cynicism. Despite his enviable financial attainment as a successful attorney and now as a top ranking member of Lagos State Executive Council, Wahab remains approachable, relatable, and emotionally present in the lives of those around him. He listens. He does not hoard power; he extends it. He does not seek worship; he offers witness. Wahab moves through the world as one aware of its fragility —kind to strangers, loyal to friends, and fiercely dedicated to the upliftment of the downtrodden. His compassion is not theoretical. It is practical. It is seen in his countless acts of kindness to the needy, in his willingness to stand by the weak and the broken. It is this deep humanity that has earned him affectionate respect with many holding him in awe.

Birthdays are not mere occasions meant for only celebrations, during which glasses filled with vintage drinks are clinked and sumptuous delicacies munched.

They are also opportunities for introspection and expression of gratitude to God for the grace to be alive and be counted among the living.

For Wahab, who turns a new page on his book of life today, Saturday, May 17, 2025 —as he clocks 53— it is a rare opportunity to worship his creator for a beautiful and richly-rewarding year.

The Ketu Epe-born TW will not be hosting a loud revelry for all and sundry but likely an exclusive une petite soirée for a close circle of friends at his plush crib inside elite’ haven of Banana Island, Lagos.
