CYRIACUS IZUEKWE

Ayobo – a sleepy town in Lagos was on Sunday 19th August, 2018, greeted with the gory sight of a helpless mother whose face and skull were badly battered by her son in his morbid attempt to advance his cyber fraud business through rituals known in the local parlance as yahoo plus.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident took place on the aforementioned date, at about 0830hrs, at No.2 Raji Ajanaku Street, Alaja Road, Ayobo, Lagos, inside the flat of the 29-year old suspect, Taiwo Akinola, who lived with his mother, Mrs. Alice Iyabo Akinola and her 14-year old grandchild, Master Faruk.

In a carefully thought out plan to kill his mother, Taiwo, who was said to be a staunch member of the notorious Aiye Confraternity, went to the victim’s shop in front of their apartment and asked his mother to meet him inside the house for an important discussion. At same time, he sent his nephew, Faruk, to go and buy him a white handkerchief and a stick of cigarette. As soon as his mother, Mrs. Alice Iyabo Akinola, entered the house the suspect attacked her. He smashed her head with a plank, pressing iron and a UPS charger to ensure she did not survive the ferocious attack.

When Faruk returned from the errand, he did not see his grandmother in the shop so he went into the house only to see the poor woman lying in the pool of her blood. Shocked by what he saw, the small boy raised alarm which attracted neighbours to the scene.

They called the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ayobo Division who arrived the scene with his team and promptly arrested the suspect. They secured the scene for further investigation by the police forensic experts attached to the Homicide section SCIID Panti, Yaba. The victim was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment where doctors were battling to revive her. As at the time of filing this report, Taiwo’s mother, Mrs. Alice Iyabo Akinola was still unconscious. Meanwhile the Lagos CP has paid the initial hospital cost which enabled the doctors to commence treatment.

During a brief interrogation, the suspect disclosed that he was asked to kill his mother in order to have more money. When police detectives searched his room, the following exhibits were recovered. Viz:
1. Two calabashes – one containing human skull and another mixture of dark concoctions
2. A plank perforated with nails and stained with blood
3. A pressing iron stained with blood
4. A white handkerchief with which Taiwo had wanted to scoop the victim’s blood
5. A bottle containing oil and labelled ‘Back To Sender’

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Imohimi Edgal, used the opportunity to call on Lagosians to rise against all forms of crime and criminality. He added that the Command defeated the Badoo cult group with the help of the people as they provided credible and timely information to the police. He said that the time has come to root out the street cult groups. He noted that complacency is not an option in the face of threat to peace and security posed by these nefarious associations.
