The price of greed may be fatal when one considers what happened to two men, Akilu Mustapha and Oyarinde Jonathan, who staked N14.7m to local fraudsters a.k.a money doublers in Lagos State in order to become richer.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the duo was swindled by the gang to the extent they became jobless and could not feed their families over their desires to become richer in the process.
The incident happened at Kakawa Street in Lagos, where the victims, Mustapha and Jonathan, met the scammers and they convinced them to invest the money with a promise to have double returns the next day.
When they became convinced, they brought $30,000 Dollars, which the equivalent was the said amount in Naira and gave to them. They were then asked to come the next day to collect the money as it would have been doubled for them.
On the next day, when they came at the agreed time, they did not find any of them as they had bolted away with their money and disconnected every communication they had with them.
It was then that they realized that they had been duped and they reported the alleged fraud to the Police at Human Rights Resource Center in Ikeja, Lagos. The Police operatives then moved into action and arrested one of the suspects, Yusuf Rilwan and detained him at the Command for interrogation.
During interrogation, the 28-year old Rilwan admitted that they obtained the money from them and had no intention to double any money for them while claiming before the Police that the victims were duped because of their greed.
The Police found him culpable and subsequently charged him before the Ejigbo Magistrates Court for conspiracy and obtaining under false pretence.
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Njue, then asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A.K. Dosumu granted him bail in the sum N1m with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood.
He was remanded in the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions while the matter was adjourned till 16th November, 2022, for mention.
