Dr. Mike Agbolade Ishola Adenuga Jnr. is not your average billionaire. He is one of the most intriguing business figures in Africa. He is a risk taker. Believably, Adenuga loves risk. He seems to be living on the knife-edge. All serious entrepreneurs do this because they take risks —if they fail—they just brush it off.

Adenuga has this phenomenal bounce back factor.

Unlike other people who get absorbed by their failure, get stymied, and do nothing else for a while, Adenuga can cope conveniently. He did it in the volatile upstream oil industry and even took a greater risk with the telecommunication sector but eventually won bigger.

Adenuga is a visionary. Someone who comes along perhaps once a century who is actually changing the way we function and the way we communicate.

When Adenuga launched Globacom in 2003, he was not stepping into an empty market. His company entered Nigeria’s telecommunications industry as the country’s first fully indigenous mobile operator.

By entering a market already dominated by foreign entities with two years of head-start advantages of already established strong positions, significant customer bases and powerful infrastructure, yet his brand, simply called ‘Glo’, immediately disrupted established practices and proved that a Nigerian brand could operate to the highest international standards.

Twenty three years later, the man behind Glo is taking on the giants of the telecommunications industries, and winning.

The brand has evolved from early GSM days into the era of smartphones, digital payments, and high-speed internet.

With required capital, patience and the willingness to challenge assumptions about who could lead the market, Adenuga has successfully taken on established players who have listed their shares on public stock exchanges as publicly quoted competitors.

Glo has stayed under single private ownership since it started operations. No outside equity while it pursued a different strategy of building a distinctly Nigerian telecommunications brand while expanding network reach, laying a terrestrial fibre backbone across Nigeria and making mobile communication accessible to a much wider market.

That was a big feather in Adenuga’s cap.

Adenuga, 73, has always been different. His entrepreneurial ventures started early. His big break came at a very relatively young age of 38 on the Christmas Day of 1991 when he struck oil in commercial quantities in the shallow waters offshore Ondo State.

His firm, Consolidated Oil (now Conoil Plc) hit pay dirt. At a depth of 4,800 feet, Adenuga found its first pay zone. He also became the first Nigerian to strike oil since the federal government opened up the oil exploration and exploitation business to private entrepreneurs. And he made awful millions of money.

But in typical Adenuga style, he recycled the bulk of that fortune from ‘Black Gold’ into his next major venture: telecommunication.

Led by his passion for perfectionism, determination, and a heroic work ethic, Adenuga has succeeded in markets that were previously considered impossible to conquer. He is someone who had higher expectations of himself than he did for other people so he pushed himself very very hard. His journey demonstrates that competing with established companies is rarely about simply copying what they already do. It is about identifying where the market is still underserved, building a compelling alternative and having the patience to earn market share over time.

Over the past year, Glo has carried out extensive modernization initiatives, including the expansion of its fiber-optic backbone, deployment of advanced 4G LTE technology, and optimization of network capacity to meet the growing demand for high-speed internet.

These efforts have resulted in faster connectivity, reduced latency, and provided more reliable access for millions of subscribers.

The impact of these projects is evident in the surge of data customers on the Globacom network.

With enhanced service quality, more Nigerians are choosing Globacom as their preferred provider for affordable and dependable internet access. This growth underscores the company’s role as a catalyst for digital inclusion and economic advancement in Nigeria.

In all of these, Adenuga has reaffirmed his status as a leading corporate statesman.

The billionaire magnate stands as a beacon of humility, compassion, and unmatched leadership.

Adenuga is one of those risk-taking individuals that toe new paths rather than the easier route of accepted success.

He has proven over time that he possesses a quality of constant invention and self-improvement that has earned him global acclaim and prosperity.

But as a man of few words, Adenuga, a Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), the nation’s second highest honour, always prefers to let his silent actions speak for him.
