Football bodies, UEFA and FIFA, have suspended Russian clubs and Russian National teams from world football, in a decision which was jointly taken in an emergency meeting on Monday, 28th February, 2022.
With the decision, Russia will be excluded from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. UEFA also went further by cancelling the Gazprom sponsorship contract.
Russian teams won’t be allowed to partake in any of UEFA or FIFA competitions until further notice. UEFA also before the announcement disqualified Russian top team, Spartak Moscow, from the Europa League and German side RB Leipzig will automatically go through to the Europa League quarter finals.
FIFA and UEFA decided together that all Russian teams, whether national representative teams or club teams, shall be suspended from participation in both FIFA and UEFA competitions until further notice.
These decisions were adopted by the Bureau of the FIFA Council and the Executive Committee of UEFA, respectively the highest decision-making bodies of both institutions on such urgent matters.
Football is fully united here and in full solidarity with all the people affected in Ukraine. Both Presidents hope that the situation in Ukraine will improve significantly and rapidly so that football can again be a vector for unity and peace amongst people.
