The political atmosphere in Umuchu community, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, has become tense following the emergence of multiple candidates from the community for the January 16, 2027 National Assembly elections.
The situation deepened after the Independent National Electoral Commission released the final list of candidates on Friday, September 12. Four sons of Umuchu were listed for federal positions, a development that has sparked both excitement and anxiety in the community.
For the Aguata Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat, Umuchu now has four candidates on the ballot. They are Dr. Chibueze Ofobuike of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Johnbosco Onunkwo of the All Progressives Congress, Hon. Onunkwo Ebere Anthony of the Allied Peoples Movement, and Uduonu Emmanuel William of the Action Democratic Party.
INEC listed Uduonu Emmanuel William as number 28 on the final list. He is from Umugama in Umuchu and is from the same kindred as Dr. Ofobuike and Hon. Onunkwo Ebere. The fact that three of the four House aspirants come from one kindred has further complicated discussions within the community.
For the Anambra South Senatorial seat, Hon. Gregory Amarube, popularly known as Dino, is contesting under the Zenith Labour Party. This means Umuchu alone has candidates in both the Senate and House of Representatives races for the first time in recent history.
Aguata Federal Constituency is made up of 14 communities. They are Ekwulobia, Igbo-Ukwu, Uga, Achina, Akpo, Amesi, Isuofia, Umuchu, Aguluezechukwu, Ezinifite, Ikenga, Oraeri/Oraerifite, Umuona, and Nkpologwu. With Ekwulobia as the commercial hub and the largest voting bloc, political analysts say no single community can win the seat without alliances.
APGA is relying on incumbency and the popularity of Governor Charles Soludo’s administration to win the seat. APC is campaigning on federal alignment ahead of 2027 and is presenting its candidate as someone who can attract federal projects. APM, ADP and ZLP are positioning themselves as alternatives for voters seeking options outside the two major parties.
Sources within the Umuchu political class told P.M. EXPRESS that the development has created division and anxiety among elders, town union leaders, and other stakeholders. Many are worried that with four candidates from one community contesting the same House seat, votes will be split and the community may lose out to other towns in Aguata.
“Aguata is not Umuchu alone. If we divide ourselves four ways, other communities will take advantage and we may end up with nothing,” a stakeholder who asked not to be named said. “We have always prided ourselves on unity. This is the time to test that unity.”
Another elder expressed concern that the absence of a zoning or consensus arrangement could damage the unity the community has enjoyed over the years. He called for urgent meetings of the Umuchu General Assembly, town union, and political stakeholders to harmonize interests before full campaign begins.
Some leaders, however, view it as an opportunity. They argue that if Dino wins the Senate and one of the House candidates wins, Umuchu will have unprecedented federal representation which could translate to more projects, appointments, and influence in Abuja. For a community that has not produced a federal lawmaker in recent times, the prospect is being welcomed by some youth groups.
A youth leader urged elders to quickly convene a unity meeting to coordinate strategy and prevent rivalry that could damage relationships in the community. “We should celebrate that our sons are qualified. But we must also be strategic so that the pride does not turn to loss,” he said.
Reacting after his clearance by INEC, Hon. Onunkwo Ebere Anthony called for a peaceful contest. “I welcome other contestants to the field and look forward to a keen contest based on free, fair, and peaceful electoral process. Together, the future is bright and we will get there,” he said.
Political observers say the coming weeks will be critical. It will show whether Umuchu leaders can broker peace, persuade some aspirants to step down for the interest of the community, or allow the contest to proceed to the ballot and risk vote splitting.
INEC has fixed January 16, 2026 for National Assembly elections nationwide. Campaigns are expected to begin soon, and attention will be on Umuchu as the community navigates this delicate political moment.
For now, the Umuchu political class is caught between pride in producing multiple qualified candidates and the fear of losing the seat due to internal division. How the community manages the next few months may determine its political relevance in Aguata for the next four years.
