There is excitement in the air in Umuchu, the pride of Aguata LGA in Anambra State, as the community gets set to celebrate this year’s New Yam Festival for 3 days.
The 2026 Umuchu New Yam Festival will hold from Friday, September 4 to Sunday, September 6, 2026 at the Umuchu Mini Stadium. The 3-day celebration will feature cultural displays, prayers, and thanksgiving by the community and her traditional rulers.
This year’s festival will be unique as the town is set to unveil 3 distinct traditional masquerades, one from each of the 3 major blocks in Umuchu: Amanasaa, Ihite, and Okpu na Achalla.
According to the festival planning committee, the decision to present a masquerade from each block was made to promote unity, cultural pride, and to showcase the rich heritage of Umuchu to the world.
The New Yam Festival, known locally as Iri Ji Ohu, is a major cultural event in Umuchu. It is a time when indigenes at home and in the diaspora return to give thanks to God and to their ancestors for a bountiful harvest and protection throughout the farming season.
While the festival is celebrated annually, 2026 stands out because of the grand cultural display lined up. For the first time in recent years, the 3 blocks will be showcasing their own signature masquerades on the same stage.
Known for preserving ancient dance steps, Amanasaa will present a masquerade that represents strength, bravery, and the protection of the community.
Ihite’s masquerade will focus on creativity and music, with unique drum rhythms, colourful costumes, and dance steps that reflect the block’s artistic heritage.
Okpu na Achalla will unveil a masquerade that symbolizes wisdom, peace, and community leadership, key values in Igbo tradition.
All 3 masquerades will perform at the Umuchu Mini Stadium, giving visitors, tourists, and indigenes a rare opportunity to see the diversity of Umuchu culture in one place.
The New Yam Festival is more than a celebration of food. It is a spiritual and cultural gathering that marks the end of one farming season and the beginning of another.
The ceremony begins with prayers of thanksgiving and the ceremonial eating of the new yam by the Igwe in council. This signifies that the land has been blessed and it is safe for everyone to eat from the new harvest.
After the rites, there will be traditional dances, cultural displays, masquerade performances, and visits to family homes. It is also a period for reconciliation, where misunderstandings are settled and unity is emphasized.
For the Umuchu diaspora in Lagos, Abuja, US, UK, and Singapore, the festival is a major reason to return home. Many describe it as “coming home” to remember their roots and connect with their culture.
The planning committee says security and traffic arrangements are already in place to welcome guests to the Umuchu Mini Stadium for all 3 days.
There will be stalls showcasing local food, palm wine, art and crafts. Traditional rulers from neighboring towns are also expected to attend.
The committee is calling on all sons and daughters of Umuchu at home and abroad to come home and be part of history.
“Let us come together, wear our attire, and show the world the beauty of Umuchu culture,” a member of the committee said.
Visitors should expect free cultural displays, traditional wrestling, music, and the best of Umuchu hospitality across the 3 days.
P.M.EXPRESS will bring live updates and photographs from the event at Umuchu Mini Stadium.
