Nigeria’s rapidly expanding airline, United Nigeria Airlines, has made significant strides towards its goal of becoming a global carrier by being admitted as a member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The prestigious membership was conveyed to the airline in a letter dated October 9, 2023, from IATA Director General, William Walsh.

In the recent Press Release signed by Achilleus-Chud Uchegbu, Head Corporate Communication United Nigeria Airlines, Walsh expressed his pleasure in welcoming United Nigeria Airlines into the IATA fold, emphasizing the association’s mission to represent, lead, and serve the aviation industry. IATA is the collective voice of approximately 300 airlines from over 120 countries, with a vision to shape a safe, secure, and sustainable air transport industry worldwide.

The IATA Director General highlighted the group’s priorities, which include enhancing global safety, ensuring sustainable industry growth, driving digital transformation, and becoming the trusted source for aviation data. He expressed hopes that United Nigeria Airlines, its employees, and passengers would benefit from the airline’s IATA membership.

United Nigeria Airlines’ Chief Operating Officer (COO), Mazi Osita Okonkwo, viewed the membership as a significant milestone that solidifies the airline’s strategic engagements towards achieving its goals. He emphasized their commitment to operating in accordance with global aviation standards and exceeding customer expectations in areas such as safety, quick service delivery, and top-notch customer service.

The IATA membership follows United Nigeria Airlines’ accreditation as an IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certified carrier in May. This certification affirms the airline’s adherence to industry-leading safety practices.

United Nigeria Airlines is currently focused on expanding its operations and expects to launch direct flights to Accra, Ghana, and other regional destinations. Additionally, the airline plans to increase its fleet size with the arrival of two Airbus A320 aircraft in mid-October and early December, followed by the introduction of E-190 Embraer aircraft in the first quarter of 2024.

Moreover, the airline recently obtained approval from the Federal Government of Nigeria to commence direct flight operations to North America, Europe, and the Middle East. This milestone positions United Nigeria Airlines for further growth and enhances its global recognition within the aviation industry.

United Nigeria Airlines’ continued achievements, including its IATA membership and IOSA certification, demonstrate its commitment to providing safe and exceptional air travel experiences for passengers, further solidifying its position as a leading airline in Nigeria and beyond.
