Wenger Invited To Weah’s Inauguration

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been invited to Monrovia later this month to attend the inauguration of Liberia’s president-elect George Weah, whom he once coached at French side Monaco.

Wenger coached Weah between 1988 and 1992, and has found it an uphill task hiding his pride for the former FIFA World Player of the Year.

Weah was declared winner of the Liberia presidential run-off after garnering 61.5 per cent of the vote from 98.1 per cent of ballots cast, to beat his opponent Vice-President Joseph Boakai, who managed 38.5 per cent of the vote.

Following that win, Wenger said he had received an invitation from Weah to attend the inauguration ceremony in Monrovia.

He however cast doubt on the prospects of him attending, saying that would depend on him being suspended by the English Football Association for comments he made about the refereeing of the December 31 Premier League game against West Bromwich Albion.

“I have been invited by George to come to the day where he will be the President,” BBC reports Wenger to have said.

“I believe I will be busy but if I am suspended (for his comments on referees) I will have time to go.”

Now, the 68-year-old has been suspended for Arsenal’s next three games, meaning he will be out of action until January 14.

Weah’s inauguration has however been scheduled for January 22, meaning Wenger might not make it to Monrovia.
