Why Lagosians Want Ambode Back

We have read with keen interest the recent column comparing former Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, with former President Goodluck Jonathan. With all due respect, this comparison is not only misplaced but also undermines the reality of Ambode’s legacy and the deep affection Lagosians still have for him.

 

First, let it be clear: Akinwunmi Ambode is not Jonathan. Ambode’s performance in office speaks for him—his legacy is visible in roads, bridges, infrastructure, education, health, and grassroots development across Lagos. His tenure was marked by bold reforms, visionary projects, and people-centered governance. Lagosians still remember his passion for urban renewal, the Lagos Bus Reform Initiative, his massive investments in security, and his rapid infrastructural development that touched virtually every corner of the state.

 

This is why Lagosians continue to call for his return. It is not based on “jobbers” or “manufactured whispers,” as insinuated in the column, but on lived experiences. The people saw what he did in just four years, and they know what more he can achieve if given the chance.

 

Secondly, Ambode has not declared any ambition or made any public statement about returning. Therefore, it is wrong for anyone to speak for him, to advise him against an ambition he has not announced, or to drag him into comparisons that do not reflect his reality. You cannot caution a man against a decision he has not made.

 

We, the Tinubu-Ambo Support Group, are working 24 hours not because of rumours, but because of the trust and belief Lagosians have in Ambode’s leadership qualities. We equally recognize and respect President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who remains the father of modern Lagos and the nation’s leader. There is no rift, no hidden agenda, and no wedge between Ambode and Tinubu. Those who speculate otherwise are dabbling into matters they do not understand.

 

Finally, Lagosians want Ambode back because of what they saw, touched, and benefited from. His achievements are his campaign. His record is his endorsement. His humility, technocratic brilliance, and ability to connect with the people stand him out as a leader who delivered without noise.

 

Ambode is not a pawn in anyone’s vendetta. He is a man Lagosians trust, and that is why his name remains a chorus in homes, markets, and communities across the state.
