In a significant move to promote women’s participation in local governance, the Women in Politics and Governance, WIPG, organization launched its #iSupportHer4LG initiative today at the office of the Minister of Women Affairs, Her Excellency Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye.

Leading the delegation, National Convener of WIPG, Hon. Jemilah Shuaibu, commended the Minister for her tireless efforts in advancing women’s empowerment in Nigeria. Shuaibu expressed gratitude for the Minister’s dedication to ensuring women’s voices are heard and efforts appreciated, saying, “Your ministry has been a beacon of hope for women in Nigeria, and we appreciate the job well done.”

The #iSupportHer4LG initiative aims to increase women’s representation in local government positions, and WIPG sought the Minister’s support to amplify its impact.

“In light of the Nigerian Supreme Court’s recent ruling in favour of financial autonomy for local governments and the ongoing amendments to the electoral act, we are launching an advocacy initiative to promote and support young women’s involvement in local government elections, across the country.”

This initiative is non-partisan and therefore, open to all women from various political parties in Nigeria.

Hon. Jemilah highlighted the efforts made so far by WIPG in reaching out to young women and informed the Honourable Minister that over 300 women have already filled an online form, launched by WIPG, to express their interest to run for the forthcoming Local Government elections.

In her response, Hon. Minister, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, gave her full endorsement to the initiative, stating,

“I am pleased to support the #iSupportHer4LG initiative, and my doors are open to WIPG. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of Nigerian women.”

The Minister’s endorsement is a significant boost to the initiative, and WIPG is poised to leverage this partnership to drive positive change. With the Minister’s support, WIPG will have access to expertise, resources, and a broader reach, enhancing the initiative’s impact.

The launch of #iSupportHer4LG marks a crucial step towards promoting gender equality in Nigeria’s political landscape. As WIPG and the Ministry of Women Affairs work together, Nigerian women can expect increased opportunities for participation and representation in local governance.
