A 32-year old woman, Dally Funmi Faith, has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly maltreating her 12-year old niece by assaulting and stripping her naked in public before she was exposed by one of their neighbours.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 2nd June, 2024, at Margaret Oriyomi Close, off Agnes Adeniran Street, Ebule Egba area of Lagos, where they reside.
According to the Police, the suspect was arrested after she assaulted the victim with a stick, inflicted injury on her body and yet went further to strip her naked in the public over an undisclosed offence.
The victim, who was said to be living with the suspect, had continued to suffer abuse and maltreatment to the extent that she subjected her to disgrace by stripping her naked in public.
However, one of their neighbours, who did not like what happened to the victim contacted the Police in the area and the suspect was arrested and transferred to the Gender Section of the Police Command at Ikeja for interrogation over her alleged conduct against the victim.
During the interrogation, the Police discovered that it was not the first time, she was subjecting the victim to such torture and inhuman treatment as testified by other neighbours.
Thus, the Police found her culpable and charged her before the Ogba Magistrate Court for the alleged assault and indecent treatment under the Criminal Laws of the State.
However, she pleaded not guilty when she was arraigned.
The prosecutor, Inspector John Iberedem, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since she pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that she actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. E. Kubenije, granted her bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when she will perfect her bail conditions.
