A 42-year old woman, Oyedeji Aminat Funmilayo, has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly swindling another woman, Mrs. Wasilat Ajayi, to the tune of N29m under false pretence.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 1st January, 2025, at Adebisi Awolola Street, Mushin, Lagos.

According to the Police, the suspect contacted the complainant and obtained the money under false pretence for undisclosed purposes. She bolted away with the money upon receipt and disconnected every communication she had with the complainant.

The matter was reported to the Police at the State Intelligence Department at the Command, Ikeja. The operatives moved into action, eventually arrested and detained her for interrogation over her alleged conduct against the complainant.

After thorough interrogation, the Police found her culpable and charged her before the Ogba Magistrate Court for the alleged offence which attracts several years of imprisonment.

Part of the charges read:

“That you, OYEDEJI AMINAT FUNMILAYO ‘F’ of No.23, Adebisi Awolola Street, Mushin, Lagos, on the 1st January, 2025 at Mushin in Lagos Magisterial District, did steal the sum of N29,119,500.00 (Twenty Nine Million, One Hundred and Nineteen Thousand, Five Hundred Naira), property of Mrs. Wasilat Ajayi ‘f and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 280 and punishable under Section 287 of the criminal code law of Lagos State, 2015.”

COUNT II:-“That you, OYEDEJI AMINAT FUNMILAYO ‘F’ of No.23, Adebisi Awolola Street, Mushin, Lagos, on the same date at Lagos Magisterial District, did commit felony to wit stealing by criminally obtaining the sum of N29,119,500.00 (Twenty Nine Million, One Hundred and Nineteen Thousand, Five Hundred Naira), property of Mrs. Wasilat Ajayi ‘f’ and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 314 of the criminal code law of Lagos State, 2015.”

COUNT III:-“That you, OYEDEJI AMINAT FUNMILAYO ‘F’ of the same address on the same date in the same Magisterial District, did conduct yourself in manner likely to cause breach of public peace and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 168 (1) (d) of the criminal code law of Lagos State, 2015.”

However, she pleaded not guilty..

The prosecutor, Supol Josephine Ihkayere, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since she pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that she actually committed the alleged offence.

The Presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.A. Owolabi, granted her bail with two sureties, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.

The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when she will perfect her bail conditions.
