A 46-year-old woman, Augustina Okezie, was arraigned before a Magistrate Court in the Ikeja Magisterial District over allegations of assault and threat to harm a minor.
According to the charge sheet in Commissioner of Police versus Augustina Okezie, the alleged incident occurred on April 22, 2026, at about 2:00 p.m.
The prosecution stated that the matter took place at No. 32, Fashoro Street, Opesa, Opeki Bus-stop, Ipaja, Lagos.
The charge alleged that the defendant beat her 16-year-old daughter, Favour. It further alleged that she used a knife, bottle and mortar to threaten the teenager.
The offence is stated to be contrary to and punishable under Section 135 (1) (2) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015. The section covers assault, battery and threat to cause harm.
The case was filed by the Divisional Police Officer, Ipaja, Lagos, under SP Endurance Ovwigho. The Prosecuting Officer listed on the document is Inspector Shittu Ayantoun of Ipaja Division.
In court, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, SP Philip Ademigbuji, asked the court to fix a date for hearing to enable the Police to prove the allegations.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. O. Kusanu, granted the defendant bail with one surety. The court ordered the surety to provide evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment.
The matter was adjourned for mention. The defendant was remanded at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre pending the perfection of her bail conditions.
Under Nigerian law, every person charged with an offence is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. This is provided for under Section 36(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended.
Cases involving minors are also guided by the Child’s Rights Law of Lagos State, 2007. The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency, DSVA, has advised the public to report cases of child abuse or domestic violence to the agency or nearest Police station for investigation and support.
