The Imo East (Owerri Zone) Senatorial Candidate of the Action People’s Party (APP), Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi, said that his attention has been drawn to the disturbing wave of politically motivated destruction targeted at the facilities of opposition political parties in Imo State, particularly those belonging to the Action People’s Party, APP.
In a statement signed by Cajetan Duke, JP, the Chief Press Secretary to Dr Chima Matthew Amadi, he said, “This unfortunate development represents another dangerous assault on democratic values, political tolerance, and peaceful participation in the electoral process”.
“Imolites woke up on Sunday July 19th, 2026, to the shocking news of the reckless and unprovoked vandalization of the APP’s facilities at the Iwuanyanwu Glass House State Secretariat of the party. The destruction of party official signage and other political infrastructure is not an isolated incident but appears to be part of a calculated pattern of intimidation aimed at silencing opposition voices and shrinking the democratic space ahead of the 2027 general elections.”
“Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi unequivocally condemns this reprehensible act and describes it as an attack not only on the Action People’s Party but also on the principles of democracy. Democracy thrives where political parties are allowed to canvass support freely, citizens exercise their rights without fear, and elections are contested on the strength of ideas, vision, and performance rather than intimidation and violence.”
“According to the APP senatorial candidate, the deliberate destruction of opposition property transcends ordinary vandalism. It constitutes a direct assault and infringement on the constitutional rights to freedom of association, freedom of expression, and political participation. Resorting to intimidation instead of healthy democratic competition is an indication of political insecurity rather than political strength.”
“Amadi, a renowned social entrepreneur, philanthropist, and University of Ibadan-trained human nutritionist with an impressive academic background spanning leading institutions in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, maintains that leadership must always be earned through competence, credibility, compassion, and the confidence of the people, not through fear, coercion, or the abuse of state institutions.”
“He insists that no amount of intimidation, harassment, or politically motivated destruction can discourage the people of Imo State from exercising their constitutional right to freely choose leaders who genuinely represent their aspirations. History has consistently demonstrated that the collective will of the people cannot be suppressed by acts of impunity and “iberiberism”.
“The people of Imo State have repeatedly shown remarkable political consciousness by resisting executive excesses, abuse of power, impunity, high-handedness, and every form of political intimidation through the ballot box. The present wave of attacks against opposition political parties will not alter that democratic tradition. Rather, it further reinforces the determination of the electorate to defend democracy and protect the sanctity of their votes.”
“We are aware that the increasing popularity and acceptance of our political message across the state have understandably unsettled the ruling party. The growing desire of our people for credible, compassionate, and accountable leadership has become increasingly evident, and no amount of intimidation can reverse the people’s legitimate aspiration for positive political change.”
“Instead of focusing on suppressing political opponents, those entrusted with governance should devote their attention to addressing the numerous challenges confronting the state, including economic hardship, unemployment, insecurity, decaying infrastructure, and declining public confidence in government. The people deserve leadership that prioritizes solutions over political intimidation.”
“Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi therefore, calls on all security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant institutions, to discharge their constitutional responsibilities with professionalism, neutrality, and fairness. Every registered political party in the state deserves equal protection under the law, while every citizen must be guaranteed the freedom to participate in the democratic process without fear of intimidation or victimization.”
“He equally urges supporters of the Action People’s Party and the good people of Imo State to remain peaceful, law-abiding, and focused despite every provocation. Violence and destruction have never strengthened democracy. Only justice, tolerance, respect for the rule of law, and peaceful political engagement can guarantee credible elections and sustainable development.”
“Mazi Chima Matthew Amadi reassures the people of Owerri Zone and Imo State that the Action People’s Party remains unwavering in its commitment to providing a credible alternative anchored on competence, equity, inclusive development, and people-centred governance. No amount of harassment, intimidation, or destruction of party property will diminish that resolve. Ultimately, the future of Imo State will be determined not by fear or violence but by the sovereign will of the people freely expressed through the ballot.”
