The Lagos State Government has announced that there will be a total closure of the Adekunle to Adeniji-Adele section of the bridge from midnight of Friday, 9th October to Sunday, 11th October 2020, in furtherance of rehabilitation work on the Third Mainland Bridge.

According to a statement issued today and signed by the Honourable Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, the closure became necessary to prevent vibrations on the bridge during the casting of newly installed expansion joints that will allow the special concrete achieve its required compressive strength.

The Commissioner explained further that casting of the expansion will be in two phases due to the high number of joints that will be cast, as well as the need to effectively manage the attendant traffic, adding that the first phase closure of the section was slated for this weekend to minimise the inconveniences for road users.

Appreciating the patience exhibited by Lagosians since the commencement of the project, Oladeinde hinted that the previous alternative routes remain the same for road users to utilise during the closure, assuring that LASTMA and other Traffic Management Agencies will be available to direct traffic for vehicular movement.

He also noted that the section of the bridge between Adekunle and Iyana-Oworo will remain open, as well as the Ebute-Metta outbound section into Iyana-Oworo, hinting that the second phase closure of the Adekunle and Adeniji section of the bridge will be announced at a later date to enable residents plan their movement within the metropolis.

The State Commissioner, therefore, appealed to road users and motorists for the temporary inconvenience caused by the closure, stressing that the planned rehabilitation is geared towards ensuring that the January 2021 deadline for the completion of the project is achieved.
