The Igbo people living in Alimosho Local Government have concluded plans to mark the Igbo day and annual New Yam festival, which is slated for Saturday 27th November, 2021, with some dignitaries within and outside Lagos State set to attend to make the event unique and historic.
P.M.EXPRESS confirmed that the event will take place at the Palace of the Chairman, Igbo Council of traditional rulers and Ezendigbo in Alimosho, Eze (Dr.) Lawrence Eze, while his amiable wife, Lolo Ugoeze Udoaka Eze, is the Mother of the Day.
It was gathered that so many activities have been lined up, which include display of Igbo rich cultural heritage such as masquerades, dances, drama among others at the palace of the Ezendigbo, Alimosho, Eze Lawrence Eze, which is located at 26 Popoola Street, Ikotun area of Lagos State.
The event is being organized by the Igbo stock living in the six Local Council Development Areas, which make up Alimosho to host the dignitaries, who are coming from various states with Major General Elvis Njoku as the Special Guest of Honour.
Also chairmen of the six Local Governments and top Lagos State Government officials will grace the occasion to build more synergies with other ethnic groups in the state.
This was confirmed by the Ezendigbo, Alimosho, Eze (Dr.) Eze, who said that the festival is being organized by the Igbo Community in Alimosho under his leadership.
Eze Lawrence, who was former board member of the Federal Medical Centre, stated the significance of the New Yam festival to Ndigbo, which is the reason it is being celebrated by the Igbo people all over the world.
He stated that the festival has its origin from the forefathers of Ndigbo, who sustained eating yam in the time of lack and maintained that yam as the chief crop for Igbo people.
He explained that the event will be also used to thank God for His mercy and protection and then take stock of various activities during the year.
Eze, who also holds the title of Agunabo in Awka town, Anambra State, stated the Igbo during the celebration will use the period to recognize and honour Igbo sons and daughters including friends, who have distinguished themselves in various fields.
In the same vein, the second in command, known as Chief Charles Obiora Mofunanya, stated that the event will afford the Igbo children living in diaspora the opportunity to learn more about the Igbo culture and tradition since they cannot travel home during such events.
He stated that traditional rulers from other ethnic groups are expected at the event, which has already started attracting attention all over the world.
