The people of Asaba, Delta State have continued to reap in the multiplier effects of the hosting of the 21st African Senior Athletics Championships in the state capital.

Those who are directly affected are people having their businesses around the vicinity of Stephen Keshi Stadium. A cross section of people who spoke with PM EXPRESS were full of praises for their Governor, Senator Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa, who they said brought the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) event and indeed the whole of Africa to the city of Asaba.

“The Governor knows what is good for his people and I think it’s a good decision to bring this kind of championships to Asaba. You can see the enthusiasm among the people, both young and old. We are happy, ” Mr Osadebe, a taxi driver who said he has been making triple of his daily take home since the competition began on 1 August.

” Businesses around the stadium are affected positively. There has been high patronage from the visitors. I think the residents will be more grateful to the Governor for this, ” Ms Helen Okafor said.

“You can imagine that despite the gate fee, people still throng to the venue to watch exciting action on the tracks. This shows that Deltans are lovers of sports. I would imagine if Super Eagles come to play their matches here at the stadium judging from the turnout we are witnessing in an athletic event like this.

“I must commend His Excellency, Governor Okowa for his magnanimity and in his wisdom to bring the competition to Asaba. I will also commend the organisers for putting up a wonderful show for us. The memory will linger on for a very long time in the minds of the people of Asaba, ” Kevin, a banker said.
