On BBnaija And My State Governor

MAZI EJIMOFOR OPARA

As much I share in your detest of the seemingly morally bankrupt BBnaija, i do beg to differ on the infantile denigration of the Chief Executive Officer of my State, for two reasons.

First, the Governor did not swear to uphold your subjective views of morality, neither is he compelled to accept your standard for measuring same. He actually swore to uphold the laws of the land enshrined in the constitution of the Federal republic of Nigeria. Of course, it is no brainer to think that if there be any reason to fault his actions, it must stem from the constitutionality of the action or otherwise. Has the reward system of our country in any way indicted the actions of Gov. Okorocha? I doubt.

It is in this same country that we dole out big rewards, roll out the drums to welcome 22 able bodied men for chasing a defenceless orb, enjoying themselves with little value for the education you speak of – all in the name of Soccer/games. Now, have you vilified the government for doing this? No. Why? May be because you value football and enjoy watching it. It’s all part of the entertainment you are inadvertently spitting.

Now, the BBnaija is a game show with its own level of viewership, comprising bonfide citizens like you. How would you expect the State to deny this same persons the right to enjoy their own spec of entertainment simply because it does not agree with your moral predilections? I smell hypocrisy here bro.

Second, there is no nexus, whatsoever, between your unfounded critique and the quest for good governance, which happens to be the hallmark of any government. Talking about role modelling, many of us, including many State Governors, hold the late Fela in high regards. Does it follow that he (Fela) scores high on the moral scale of any sane Society?  I doubt. Yet, there are statues of him everywhere. Even the Lagos State government has in the recent past converted his “African shrine” into some tourist delight.

Oga, spare me this political hypocrisy and moral selectiveness. If the State has decided to honour Miracle and other BBnaija participants, so be it. Good a thing it is only a question of morality which is largely subjective.
