President and Chairman of Council, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) Isaac Adedayo says poor use of technology is a major cause of low tax compliance in the country.

Adedayo who stated this on Tuesday during the Cross River State Internal Revenue Service One Day Webinar/Sensitisation Exercise on Tax Management System at Hogis Hotel, Calabar.

According to him, “taxation is dynamic in nature and therefore as a country, we must keep abreast with latest developments and engage relevant stakeholders in the digital development of our tax system  nationally and globally.

Adedayo, who was represented by a Council member Nwabuzor Emenike, stated that the institute takes pride in the Cross River State Internal Revenue Service (CRIRS) for embracing the use of technology in the management of tax system in the state.

He said it aligns with the goals of the institute, adding, “As a knowledge-based institute, we commend the Cross River State Internal Revenue Service at a time like this, with issues relating to fiscal federalism and jurisdictional issues.

“One of the key elements missing in tax mobilisation today is  low embrace of technology,” he said.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Cross River State Internal Revenue Service, Akpanke Ogar, said the service was introducing integrated management system and engaging properly in digital economy.

He said the event was involved both virtual and physical participation and also featured insight into the State Centralised Automated Billing System administered by the service.

He also said the sensitisation focused on various aspects of the tax administration process such as filing, assessment, revenue payment, and others.
