The educational and mentorship programme, Creative Photography Masterclass, is set to be rounded up with an exhibition in Lagos.
The Creative Photography Masterclass in visual storytelling, a collaborative effort between African Great Ventures and Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ), kicked off its maiden edition on the 2nd of April, 2018, at NIJ campus in Ogba, Lagos. The 3-month educational and mentorship programme was designed for professional photographers who were ready to take “that next step” in moving their career forward.
The programme offered five thematic courses on visual storytelling led by renowned photography masters and facilitators among whom were: Kelechi Amadi Obi, Tam Fiofori, Uche James Iroha, Gbile Osadipe, Boye Ola, George Osodi, Adolphus Opara, Don Barber, Yetunde Ayeni Babaeko, Hakeem Salaam, David Asumah, Godwin Anaebonam, Andrew Esiebo and Toye Gbade, among others.
In the course of the intensive programme, the participants were inspired to develop individual projects in documentary, fashion, advertising, photojournalism, events and travel photography under the guidance of the masters.
The Masterclass programme was based on both theoretical and practical sessions. While most of the classes were held within the premises of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism there was also location shoots outside the NIJ premises, one of which was held at a location in Badagry, Lagos.
Some of the modules taught the participants were: The power of storytelling, Nigerian Photography history, Transitions in photography, the Importance of research in photography, the origin and place of alternative photography processes, Image appropriation, Post production, the Intellectual property, Copyright and image licensing laws among others. Certificates have been presented to successful participants.
The Creative Photography Masterclass maiden outing, as with others that will follow, will come to a close with a photography exhibition that will launch these new story tellers to the visual arts industry with its abundance of opportunities.
The exhibition of the participants’ photographic essays in Visual storytelling, “Work in progress”, opens on the 4th of August, 2018, and runs till 11th August, 2018. It will be held at the serene atmosphere of Thought Pyramid Art Centre located at 96, Norman Williams Street, Ikoyi, Lagos. It is being powered by African Great Ventures.
Testimonials and feedbacks on the success of this maiden edition of the masterclass from both the students and Masters have been overwhelmingly impressive and thus a potent yardstick to adjudge the massive success of the 2018 edition of the programme. Applications for the 2019 session begin on the 1st of November 2018 at: www.creativephotomasterclass.com For further enquiries on participation and sponsorship, call African Great Ventures on: 09070007770
According to one of the masters, Kelechi Amadi Obi, “Storytelling is at the core of social engineering and Photography is a major part of storytelling. Our sense of self and our perception of who we are is a function of what we see and what we hear”.
