The annual commemoration, which holds every October 13th, is aimed at raising awareness and provides actionable solutions to mitigate the devastating impact of natural disasters in the world.

Dr. Okelekwe, who is widely recognized as a philanthropist, emphasized the urgent need for a multi-pronged approach to totally address the gully erosion crisis that has plagued Anambra for years as in Ekwueme Square Awka, Banks, Agulu, Nnobi and the rest.

During his address on radio, he highlighted key strategies and preventive measures that individuals and communities can adopt to curb this environmental disaster of gully erosion.

Among the recommendations made by Dr. Okelekwe were:

Afforestation: Encouraging the planting of trees and vegetation in vulnerable areas to stabilize soil and reduce erosion.

Proper Drainage Systems: The construction of effective drainage systems to divert water away from vulnerable areas.

Terracing: Implementing terracing techniques on hillsides and steep slopes to control soil erosion.

Community Awareness and Involvement: Engaging local communities in efforts to combat erosion, fostering a sense of responsibility and shared action.

Dr. Okelekwe stressed the importance of government support and with local communities to collaborate in implementation of these measures effectively. He also urged the public to take an active role in disaster risk reduction and environmental conservation.
