Dr. Okelekwe Advises Anambra Residents On Gully Erosion Prevention

In observance of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, Chief Dr. Kodilichukwu Okelekwe (Ubom Nibo), an All Progressive Congress(APC) Chieftain , has shared crucial insights with the people of Anambra State on how to combat the ever-present threat of gully erosion in the region.

The annual commemoration, which holds every October 13th, is aimed at raising awareness and provides actionable solutions to mitigate the devastating impact of natural disasters in the world.

Dr. Okelekwe, who is widely recognized as a philanthropist, emphasized the urgent need for a multi-pronged approach to totally address the gully erosion crisis that has plagued Anambra for years as in Ekwueme Square Awka, Banks, Agulu, Nnobi and the rest.

During his address on radio, he highlighted key strategies and preventive measures that individuals and communities can adopt to curb this environmental disaster of gully erosion.

Among the recommendations made by Dr. Okelekwe were:

Afforestation: Encouraging the planting of trees and vegetation in vulnerable areas to stabilize soil and reduce erosion.

Proper Drainage Systems: The construction of effective drainage systems to divert water away from vulnerable areas.

Terracing: Implementing terracing techniques on hillsides and steep slopes to control soil erosion.

Community Awareness and Involvement: Engaging local communities in efforts to combat erosion, fostering a sense of responsibility and shared action.

Dr. Okelekwe stressed the importance of government support and with local communities to collaborate in implementation of these measures effectively. He also urged the public to take an active role in disaster risk reduction and environmental conservation.

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction serves as a vital platform to raise awareness of the growing threat of natural disasters and climate change. Dr. Okelekwe’s advise and advocacy are expected to inspire positive action among Anambra residents, helping to safeguard their communities from the devastating impact of gully erosion.
