KINGSLEY UBANI

Fourteen months ago, particularly on the 6th of November 2020, the Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife, PhD performed the groundbreaking ceremony of a 3-bedroom bungalow project in Oba, Idemili South LGA. The bungalow project which is now completed was the first of the Senator’s life-changing housing projects to be flagged-off. For many of us who were present at the event, it seemed like the lawmaker had taken up a very difficult task of building houses for as many indigent families as possible.

Recalling her statements on that faithful day, Ekwunife noted that the reason she initiated the housing project was to impact the lives of families who are struggling to have a decent roof over their heads.

The Federal lawmaker said that she is a senator today because of the support of other people, particularly the electorates who voted massively for her. She stated that the support she has gotten over the years from the people had motivated her to reach out to those in distress, particularly the less privileged in the society.

To the disappointment of naysayers the journey of the housing project did not end in Oba, it turned out to be the beginning of an initiative that has today seen many families become proud owners of brand new homes. The beneficiary of the Oba project was Mrs. Eunice Agusiokwu, a poor widow who lived in the Idemili South community.

Today, the grassroots-friendly lawmaker has completed 14 of such projects with Adazi-Nnukwu, Nawfia, Agulu, Umuoji, Nri, Awka, Isuanaocha, Ukwulu, Abagana, Enugwu-Agidi and Oba as communities that have so far benefitted.

Some of the beneficiaries of the housing project include, Mrs Angela Muoneke, a physically challenged woman from Awka; Mrs Chinenye Okoye, a visually impaired beneficiary from Umuoji; Ifeanyi Uzuegbunam, an orphan from Ukwulu; Uchenna Ufoaroh, an Orphan from Abagana; Mrs Mercy Emonye, a widow from Agulu; Maureen Okekenta, a widow from Enugwu-Agidi amongst others.

The project which has continued to receive wide commendations from community and religious leaders as well as other constituents of the senatorial district is expected to capture more beneficiaries as the lawmaker continues to fulfill her promise of offering Ndi Anambra Central a representation that is effective, people-focused and grassroots-oriented.
