The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife, PhD, has called for the immediate release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu.
Senator Ekwunife, who made the statement on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, noted with sadness that the Federal Government is yet to release the IPOB leader, six days after the Court of Appeal discharged him.
The Senator said that further incarceration of Mr. Kanu is a breach of his human rights and disregard for the rule of law. She called on the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to quicken the process of releasing Kanu in accordance with the Judgment of the Court.
“Kanu’s continued detention after the court judgment sends a wrong message to the people of the South East region and indeed all lovers of justice. The federal government must not miss the opportunity to reassure the people of the region that Kanu’s trial had no regional or ethnic colouration.”, the Federal lawmaker said.
Senator Ekwunife further used the opportunity to urge sympathisers and supporters of the IPOB leader to remain law abiding, stating that she is confident that the Federal Government will tow the path of justice on Kanu’s case.
