Former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Otunba Femi Pedro was at the Epe Recreation Centre to watch the third place match between Belgium and England in the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup Finals on Saturday.

Otunba Pedro could not hide his excitement seeing the enthusiasm showed by Lagosians at the World Cup Viewing Centres established by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the people to watch live matches of the World Cup. He said the serene environment provided by the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Sports Commission at the viewing centre was excellent. He commended Governor Ambode for the initiative.

“I could even feel the electrifying atmosphere right from the outside of the Recreation Centre. This shows that the people of Epe are enjoying themselves here and for me, it’s like I’m in Russia.

“On a serious note, the idea of setting up viewing centres across the state by His Excellency, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was a fantastic idea to give the people fun spots to watch World Cup matches and again relax and enjoy themselves.

“People like this because it takes them away from home and bring them to a relax environment to mix together. I could see the excitement in the faces of the people,” said Otunba Pedro who is also the Chairman of Lagos State Sports Trust Fund.

To the Chairman of the Sports Commission, Dr Kweku Adedayo Tandoh, who was in company of Otunba Pedro to Epe Recreation Centre, the initiative of the Viewing Centres was from Governor Ambode, who wanted Lagosians to have a feel of the Russia 2018 World Cup with support from International Breweries Plc, makers of Trophy Lager Beer, Hero and Budweiser.

“The last 30 days have been so wonderful at all the Viewing Centres. I can tell you that setting up the World Cup Viewing Centres has positively affected the people. Our youths are so busy watching football, rate of crime has been reduced and businesses around these centres have also picked up. These are multiplier effects that will linger in the minds of the people for a very long time, ” Tandoh said.

On the entourage of Otunba Pedro to Epe Recreation Centre are members of the Board of Lagos State Sports Trust Fund who included the Executive Secretary, Mr Olaposi Agunbiade, board members Mr Adekoyejo Adejumo, Barrister Oladipo Awe, Mrs Moyo Ogunseinde, Mr Kenneth Odusanya Legal Adviser Mr Femi Adekunle and Mrs Adetula Williams-Brend Vender.
