The microblogging platforms of WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook have all gone down in what appeared to be another major global shutdown.
According to data on Downdetector, the three social media platforms – owned by Mark Zuckerberg — completely stopped working shortly before 5 pm on Monday, leaving millions of users worried.
The outages began to trend on Twitter as a plethora of users visited the microblogging platform to complain that they are seeing error messages on all three services across iOS applications as well as on the web.
Checks also showed that WhatsApp was not loading while a note reading “this site can’t be reached” was displayed during attempts to access Facebook and Instagram.
Representatives of WhatsApp and Facebook have responded to the outage via tweets on their respective platforms.
“We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing Facebook app. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience,” Facebook wrote.
On its part, WhatsApp said: “We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal and will send an update here as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience!”
The development makes it the second time this year that Facebook-owned services would be experiencing glitches globally with the first happening in March.
In 2019, the platforms were hit by a three-hour outage which prevented some users from accessing the platforms.
