A 38-year old father, Onyekachi Nnabuife, has been arrested for allegedly sleeping with his 9-year old step daughter in his matrimonial home.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Owonikoko Street in Ijedodo area of Ijegun, Lagos, where they reside.
The suspect, Mr. Onyekachi, was said to have got married to the victim’s mother, who then brought her to live with them. He reportedly started abusing the step daughter from the month of July up until August, 2019 but warned her never to tell his wife.
It was gathered that Mr.Onyekachi’s wife suspected the condition of the victim and asked her what happened. She then narrated how her step father had sexually abused her whenever the mother was not around.
The embittered wife went to the Family Support Unit in Ikotun and reported the matter. The Police then arrested Mr. Onyekachi and detained him at their station for investigation.
During interrogation, the Police found him culpable and later charged him before the Ogba Magistrates Court for the alleged offence.
The Court did not take his plea after the prosecutor, Supol Ezekiel Ayorinde, asked the Court to refer the matter to the DPP for advice.
Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. B.O. Osunsanmi, ordered the defendant, Onyekachi, to be remanded in prison custody pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice.
The Court also directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send to the DPP for advice.
Onyekachi may be transferred to the High Court if the DPP finds him culpable and recommends his trial for statutory rape which attracts several years in prison custody.
The matter was adjourned till 23rd September, 2019, for the report of DPP’s advice to be available.
