What worked for me may not work for you. In politics, loyalty often attracts favor, but I prioritize competence, capacity, consistency, and capability. In the case of Professor Julius Ihonvbere, the Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, his history of commitment and willingness to risk his life for the democracy we enjoy today stands him out.
During the NADECO days in exile, Ihonvbere was one of the voices behind Radio Kudirat. He played a significant role in convening leadership meetings both in Nigeria and abroad, including the Bromley meetings in Kent, held between August 28 and 30, 1998. These meetings involved notable figures like Prof. Wole Soyinka, the late Chief Anthony Enahoro, Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, the late Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, and the late Dr. Arthur Nwankwo, who had just been released from jail.
Ihonvbere was an invaluable resource to the movement, contributing intellectually, materially, and through his extensive network. I had the privilege of attending his event, “The Homecoming of the Homeboy,” at Eko La Meridian Hotel in Lagos. The distinguished personalities in attendance represented a broad coalition united against militarism and conflict in our country. If you delve into Ihonvbere’s work, such as “Instability and Military Intervention in Politics in the Periphery,” you will gain an understanding of his involvement and commitment to the democratic struggle.
In politics, Ihonvbere was seen as the long-awaited “Messiah.” With the slogan “Na Him Bi Dis,” this esteemed intellectual embarked on a journey across Edo state to seek the mandate of the people. However, those who associated with Abacha and his cohorts became obstacles on his path to Osadebey Avenue.
Ihonvbere left his mark at the Ford Foundation and served under President Olusegun Obasanjo, leaving behind a record of achievements. When he accepted the role of Secretary to the State Government during the Comrade Adams Oshiomhole administration, many criticized him, questioning why he would work under another governor after seeking to become one himself. However, unknown to these critics, when serving the nation, there are no limits to the positions one can hold, unless there are ulterior motives.
Similarly, when Ihonvbere accepted a less recognized office while working with Governor Godwin Obaseki, it was driven by a sense of service. His impact was felt before he eventually left to contest and win a seat in the House of Representatives, representing Owan Federal Constituency. Ihonvbere has consistently focused on delivering democratic dividends to his constituents, serving the nation, and fulfilling his legislative duties.
Ihonvbere exemplifies dedication and dependability. Today, his struggles have paid off, and his humility and hard work have been recognized. The power positions in the House of Representatives have been determined through weeks of deliberation, accompanied by controversy, contention, and scrutiny. The games have ended, the rewards have been distributed, and individuals like Ihonvbere are better off for being part of the right team.
Will Ihonvbere deliver as he has always done? Yes, Nigerians are confident that he will do his best in this season of renewed hope under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leader of the struggle with whom Ihonvbere worked in exile to bring about our present democracy.
It is my firm believe that Ihonvbere will stay true to his principles – uphold his values and remain committed to the ideals that have guided his political journey. And that he will continue to align his actions and decisions with his core beliefs.
Once again, congratulations Prof.!
