PRINCE EZE UGOCHUKWU
The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) recently held a ceremony awarding honorary doctorate degrees, with the event significantly shaped by the presence and actions of its Vice Chancellor, Professor Nnenna Oti.
Amongst the recipients of honorary doctorate degrees was His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, Governor of Imo State. The award, presented under Professor Oti’s leadership, recognizes Governor Uzodimma’s significant contributions to the development of Imo State.
The decision to bestow this honor reflects FUTO’s acknowledgement of Governor Uzodimma’s impactful governance and his demonstrated support for the university’s growth and development.
In 2023 during the inauguration of the newly established FUTO Teaching Hospital, Owerri, Dr. Achigbu Kingsley, Chief Medical Director of the University Teaching predicted that Governor Uzodimma’s legacy will be firmly established in history. This sentiment was also echoed by Professor Nnenna Oti who highlighted the Governor’s “incredible affinity and robust support” for FUTO. Senator Jack Tilley-Gyado further praised Governor Uzodimma’s leadership, describing him as possessing a “very universal chemistry” and undeniable charm. These accolades underscore the significance of Governor Uzodimma’s contributions to FUTO, Imo State and the nation at large.
The awarding of the honorary doctorate to Governor Uzodimma under the leadership of Professor Oti is a significant event, not only for the university but for Nigeria as a whole. It highlights the intersection of academic excellence, ethical leadership, and political recognition. Professor Oti’s presence at the helm of FUTO during this event underscores the institution’s commitment to integrity and its role in fostering ethical leadership within the broader Nigerian context.
Governor Uzodimma’s award, celebrated amidst this backdrop of ethical commitment, further emphasizes the importance of recognizing exemplary leadership and its positive impact on societal development. The event serves as a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of these aspects and their impact on shaping a better future for Nigeria.
Governor Uzodimma was honoured for his “decades of meritorious, selfless, and outstanding services” to the people of Imo State, the nation, and humanity. His dedication to improving the lives of Imo State citizens, coupled with his strong support for FUTO, solidified the university’s decision to award him this prestigious honour.
