In a bold and unprecedented move, Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara has taken a decisive step toward reshaping Rivers State’s approach to disaster management by revamping the moribund state fire service. After 12 years of neglect, the Governor’s visionary leadership has ushered in a new era of preparedness, ensuring that Rivers State is equipped to protect lives and property with efficiency and speed.

As part of this transformation, Governor Fubara recently inspected three critical fire service stations undergoing comprehensive reconstruction. The facilities, located at Mile 1 (Abali Park), Rumuodumaya, and Borokiri, are being rebuilt from the ground up to meet global standards. These stations, which are set to be commissioned in the first week of March 2025, will serve as the backbone of a reinvigorated fire service infrastructure.

Adding to this historic achievement is the procurement of state-of-the-art firefighting trucks, equipped with cutting-edge technology to handle emergencies with precision and professionalism. Four of these advanced trucks have already arrived, with more expected to bolster the fleet. Once operational, these trucks will be strategically deployed across the state to ensure rapid response times in the event of fire outbreaks or other emergencies.

During his inspection, Governor Fubara expressed a strong commitment to ending the state’s over-reliance on multinationals such as Shell, Agip, and Chevron for fire incident management. He underscored the importance of self-reliance in disaster response, stating:

“For more than a decade, Rivers State has lacked a functional fire service. This is unacceptable for a government entrusted with the safety of its people. Today, we are rewriting that narrative. These facilities and equipment represent a bold step toward safeguarding lives and properties across the state.”

The Governor emphasized that emergencies—whether natural or accidental—require a government that is prepared, proactive, and equipped to respond effectively. He assured the people of Rivers State that the revamped fire service would provide a robust, self-sufficient safety network.

“We owe it to our people to act decisively and responsibly. This investment in modern facilities and equipment will ensure that we are ready to respond to any emergency without dependence on external assistance. It is a clear message that Rivers State is taking its responsibilities seriously.”

Governor Fubara expressed satisfaction with the progress of the reconstruction projects and commended the contractors for their dedication to meeting deadlines. With confidence in their pace of work, he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering on its promises.

“The work I have seen today inspires confidence. By the first week of March 2025, these fire stations will not only be operational but will also stand as symbols of a government that prioritizes the safety and well-being of its citizens.”

This groundbreaking initiative is more than just a physical transformation; it is a testament to Governor Fubara’s broader vision of restoring public trust in governance and delivering tangible results. The revival of the fire service is a critical part of this agenda, positioning Rivers State as a model of self-reliance and innovation in disaster management.

Governor Fubara’s administration has set a new benchmark for proactive governance and accountability, leaving an indelible mark on the state’s history. This investment in public safety is not just about responding to emergencies—it is about safeguarding the future. Rivers State is now poised to lead by example, ensuring that every corner of the state is prepared for whatever challenges may arise.

With Governor Fubara at the helm, Rivers State is not only rebuilding its institutions but also reigniting hope, trust, and resilience among its people.
