LANRE OLAIDE
Governor Ambode of Lagos State arrived Russia last night for the World Cup finals between France and Croatia, and one of highlights of his arrival was that he pledged to help send Nigerians stuck in the country home.
A Russian NGO had alleged that approximately 200 Nigerians were stranded in Moscow and 400 all over Russia. They came during the World Cup games with hopes to find jobs in Moscow, but were disappointed.
As soon as Governor Ambode came out of the airport, he saw a crowd of over 50 Nigerians who had been stranded at the airport for almost 10-15 days. It was a pathetic state! Amazingly he showed solidarity and quickly pledged to send all 50 stranded Nigerians home and assigned someone to oversea the transfers and procurement of new tickets to send them home.
As at the time of this report, 19 out of the 50 were already airborne to Lagos Nigeria and the remaining 31 are leaving this evening.
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode did not stop at that, he also fed them as he gave them cash to eat while they waited for their tickets to fly home.
Ambode has clearly shown that all politicians are not the same, as NFF officials, some other senior government officials and well to do Nigerians cannot claim that they are unaware of the situation on ground in Russia but are yet to be of help.
Nigeria will only be built or destroyed by Nigerians. The integrity of our nation is at stake and something urgent must be done to get the stranded Nigerians in other Russian cities home.
