How Much Time Does Amorim Need To Truly Make An Impact At Man United?

Rúben Amorim took over as the head coach of Manchester United four months ago, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his successful stint at Sporting Lisbon. His tenure at United has seen numerous changes, both on and off the pitch, but the results have been mixed. With a crucial match against Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday and a challenging set of fixtures ahead, the question remains: Can Amorim turn things around for Manchester United?

Amorim’s success at Sporting Lisbon, where he won two Primeira Liga titles, built his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young managers. His tactical acumen, focus on youth development and commitment to an attacking style of play were key factors in his appointment at Old Trafford. Also, during this time, he has stuck to his preferred 3-4-3 formation, aiming to bring the same dynamism and flair to United.

Some players have reportedly expressed concerns about the current tactics, suggesting that a different approach might yield better short-term results. Despite these internal discussions, Amorim remains steadfast in his philosophy, emphasising the importance of consistency and long-term vision.

Former United midfielder Paul Scholes has also weighed in on the situation, highlighting the need for significant reinforcements to align with Amorim’s tactical vision. Scholes stated, “To become title contenders again, we need a new spine: a goalkeeper, two centre halves, two centre midfielders, and two centre forwards.”

Also, despite making tactical adjustments and introducing new signings, the results have not improved as hoped. Manchester United currently sits 13th in the Premier League table, far below expectations for a club of their stature. Recent defeats, such as the 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace, have added to the pressure on Amorim.

Former United captain Roy Keane didn’t hold back in his criticism following a narrow FA Cup win over Leicester City:

“Shocking. Absolutely shocking. The first half was boring—no energy, no desire. It’s not good enough.”

The upcoming match against Tottenham Hotspur, which fans can watch on DStv SuperSport Channel 203, is crucial for Amorim and his team. Tottenham, under the guidance of Ange Postecoglou, has been struggling themselves, currently sitting 14th in the Premier League. Their recent form has been poor, with 6 losses in their last 8 matches. A positive result against Tottenham could provide the much-needed boost for United and alleviate some of the pressure on Amorim.

Manchester United’s upcoming fixtures  do not get any easier following the Tottenham match. The next few games are critical and will test Amorim’s tactical flexibility and the team’s resilience.

Everton (away): February 22, 2025; Ipswich Town (home): February 26, 2025; Fulham (away): March 1, 2025; Arsenal (home): March 9, 2025; Leeds United (away): March 15, 2025

Each of these fixtures presents its own set of challenges, and United will need to perform consistently to climb up the league table.

Will Amorim’s strategies and changes be enough to turn things around? How much time does he need to truly make an impact and bring Manchester United back to its former glory? The next few months will be crucial in answering that question.
