The Igbonine Great People’s Assembly Worldwide has condemned the reported harassment and blockage of the convoy of former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, by some youth groups in Benue State during a humanitarian visit to Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area.
According to eyewitness accounts, Mr. Obi was in Yelwata to offer condolences to families and communities affected by recent violent attacks. The visit was described by organizers as a purely humanitarian and solidarity mission aimed at identifying with victims and supporting efforts toward healing and recovery.
In a statement, the Igbonine Great People’s Assembly said blocking a leader on a condolence visit represents a departure from civility and respect for human dignity. The group noted that such actions undermine the values of compassion and unity that Nigerians need at this time.
“Visiting grieving communities to offer support and prayers is an act of humanity. When that gesture is met with hostility or obstruction, it sends the wrong message about who we are as a people,” the statement read.
The Assembly described the incident as a matter of concern not only for political leaders but for all citizens who believe in the right to peaceful movement and association.
The group stated that targeting humanitarian visits for political reasons sets a dangerous precedent. It stressed that politics should not take away the common humanity that binds Nigerians together, especially in moments of grief and national tragedy.
“Communities in pain deserve comfort, not confrontation. Leaders, religious figures, and public citizens must be allowed to stand with the people without fear of intimidation,” the Assembly said.
The Igbonine Great People’s Assembly further emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of movement and freedom of assembly to all citizens, regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity, or religion.
It said no individual or group has the authority to restrict the movement of any citizen within the country, and that upholding these rights is critical to sustaining democracy and national cohesion.
The Assembly called on citizens across the country to resist actions that promote division and to instead embrace dialogue as the path to resolving differences.
The organization urged security agencies, including the Benue State Police Command and other relevant authorities, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the blockade and to take appropriate steps to prevent a recurrence.
It noted that allowing politically motivated disruptions to go unchecked could embolden further acts that threaten public peace and order.
“We expect law enforcement to act professionally and ensure that public spaces remain safe for lawful activities, including humanitarian outreach,” the statement added.
Grounded in its guiding principle of Igbonine Anyi Bu Ofu — meaning “We are One” – the Assembly reiterated its commitment to peace, unity, and mutual respect among all Nigerians.
It reminded stakeholders that sustainable peace and political progress cannot thrive in an environment of intimidation, aggression, or thuggery. The group called on youth, community leaders, and political actors in Benue and across Nigeria to choose engagement over confrontation.
The Igbonine Great People’s Assembly said it remains committed to advocating for a society where respect for life, security of citizens, and democratic values guide public conduct.
The organization concluded by expressing solidarity with the people of Yelwata and other affected communities.
