Igbonine Group Calls For Unity Among Ndigbo, Urges End To Attacks On Peter Obi

The leadership of Igbonine Great People’s Assembly Worldwide has called for unity, respect and solidarity among Igbo people both at home and in the diaspora.

The group made the call in a press statement issued on Wednesday, 24th September 2026, in Lagos, and e-signed by its National President, Dr. Ugochukwu Cyril Nnajiofor.

In the statement, Dr. Nnajiofor appealed to Ndigbo to desist from public attacks targeted at Mr. Peter Obi, former Governor of Anambra State.

The Igbonine President said the Assembly has observed with deep concern what it described as increasing cases of public attacks, insults and character assassination against Peter Obi allegedly by some Igbo individuals on various media platforms.

According to Dr. Nnajiofor, the group is making a strong and passionate appeal to all Igbos at home and in the diaspora to uphold brotherhood and collective interest.

The statement reads in part: “It has come to our notice with deep concern that some of our own brothers and sisters have joined in the public attacks, insults, and character assassination against Mr Peter Obi, a proud Igbo son and former Governor of Anambra State.”

The National President stated that politics remains a game of interest and every citizen has the democratic right to support any candidate of their choice, including the right not to support Peter Obi.

He noted that such political choices are part of democracy and should be respected.

“We want to state categorically that politics is a game of interest. You have every right to support any candidate of your choice. You have every right not to support Peter Obi. That is democracy,” Dr. Nnajiofor said.

The Igbonine leader however cautioned that political differences should not cross the line of respect and brotherhood.

“But we must not cross the line of respect and brotherhood. Even if you don’t want to support him, please stop attacking him, stop insulting him, stop sponsoring write-ups to pull him down,” he added.

Dr. Nnajiofor, who leads the socio-cultural organization with members across Nigeria and in the diaspora, described Mr. Peter Obi as an Igbo son who represents hope and dignity to many people, noting that he is more than just a political figure. bf51

The group argued that public attacks against him by fellow Igbos do not only affect him but also affect the image of Igbo unity. It said such actions could give detractors an opportunity to portray the Igbo nation as lacking internal cohesion.

“When we attack him publicly, we are not hurting him alone, we are hurting Igbo unity, we are giving our detractors weapons to mock us that Igbos do not love themselves. Remember, an injury to one is an injury to all,” the statement said.

Dr. Nnajiofor called for political maturity and respect for core Igbo traditional values such as Igwebuike, which means strength in unity, and Onye Aghana Nwanne Ya, which means no one should abandon his brother, as well as respect for elders.

The Assembly called for an immediate ceasefire on all media attacks against Peter Obi by Igbos.

It urged that energy should instead be channeled towards initiatives that promote development in Ala Igbo and support collective progress of the Igbo people.

“Let us disagree without being disagreeable. Let us show political maturity. Let us remember our core Igbo values: Igwebuike, Onye Aghana Nwanne Ya, respect for elders and for our own,” Dr. Nnajiofor stated.

The Assembly further appealed for constructive engagement and correction with love rather than hatred.

“Let us unite, not divide. Let us correct with love, not with hate. Let us protect our own,” the statement concluded.
