Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a 48-year-old man, Anaebo Emeka Hilary, for allegedly operating an illegal factory used for producing adulterated alcoholic drinks in Badagry area of Lagos State.

The suspect was arrested at Yafin, Badagry, following credible intelligence provided by members of the public, leading to the discovery and immediate sealing of the suspected illegal factory.

According to the Police, operatives who acted swiftly on the intelligence stormed the location and recovered various items suspected to be used for the production of fake alcoholic beverages, including adulterated drinks already bottled, large quantities of empty bottles, wine labels of popular brands, and production utensils.

The factory has been sealed while the suspect is currently in police custody as investigation continues.

Confirming the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, commended the operatives for their vigilance and professional conduct in uncovering the illegal operation.

CP Fatai reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and protection of public health, urging residents of Lagos State to continue providing credible information that will help the police clamp down on criminal activities.

He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through the Command’s emergency lines.

Danger of Adulterated Alcohol and Health Implications

The discovery of the illegal factory in Badagry has once again raised serious concerns over the dangers of consuming adulterated alcoholic drinks, which pose grave health risks to unsuspecting members of the public.

Medical experts warn that adulterated alcoholic drinks are often produced under unhygienic conditions without any regulatory approval, quality control, or safety standards. Such drinks are typically mixed with harmful chemical substances, industrial ethanol, and other toxic additives to increase quantity and create resemblance to original popular brands.

Health professionals state that consumption of fake and adulterated alcohol can lead to severe health complications including acute alcohol poisoning, liver damage, kidney failure, stomach disorders, and in severe cases, loss of eyesight and sudden death.

According to health authorities, some adulterated drinks contain high levels of methanol, a toxic substance that is dangerous for human consumption. Even in small quantities, methanol can cause headache, dizziness, nausea, and blurred vision, while higher consumption can result in permanent health damage.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has consistently warned Nigerians to be cautious when purchasing alcoholic drinks, especially from unverified sources, roadside stalls, and unregistered vendors. The Agency advises consumers to buy drinks only from reputable supermarkets and licensed distributors and to always check for NAFDAC registration numbers, proper sealing, and manufacturing details.

Lagos State, being a densely populated commercial hub, has become a target for unscrupulous individuals seeking to produce counterfeit consumer products for quick profit, disregarding the health implications on the public.

Police sources said the suspect, Anaebo Emeka Hilary, is cooperating with investigators and has provided useful information that could lead to tracking of distribution channels of the suspected fake drinks.

The Command said the suspect will be charged to court upon conclusion of investigation, while efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other individuals who may be connected to the illegal business.

The Lagos State Police Command reiterated its resolve to sustain raids on illegal production sites across the State and called on residents to support security agencies with timely and credible information.

Members of the public are advised to report any suspected factory or shop producing fake drinks or any other adulterated products to the nearest police station for prompt action.

This arrest brings to light the importance of community-police collaboration in safeguarding public health and ensuring that dangerous products do not find their way into the market.
