In a bid to deepen women’s participation in governance and strengthen democratic engagement, the Chairperson of Ikeja Local Government, Mrs. Fausat Temitope Dauda, has hosted a Women in Politics/Voters Registration Sensitization Programme at the Marriage Registry Hall, Ikeja Local Government Secretariat.
The well-attended event brought together women leaders, market women, political stakeholders, and women from various communities across Ikeja to discuss the critical role of women in politics and the need for increased voter registration and participation in electoral processes.
In her welcome address, Mrs. Fausat Temitope Dauda emphasized the importance of women taking their rightful place in governance and decision-making. She encouraged women who are yet to obtain their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) to do so, stressing that the power to influence leadership and public policy begins with active participation in the electoral process.
According to her, women possess the capacity, competence, and leadership qualities required to contribute meaningfully to nation-building, urging them not to remain on the sidelines of politics but to actively engage in shaping the future of their communities and the country at large.
Delivering the keynote lecture, Comrade Abayomi Francis, the Guest Speaker, highlighted the indispensable role of women in politics and governance. He noted that women should not be viewed merely as tools for election campaigns but as strategic stakeholders whose contributions are vital to sustainable development and democratic growth.
Comrade Francis commended the Executive Chairman of Ikeja Local Government, Comrade Akeem Olalekan Dauda (AKOD), for demonstrating his commitment to gender inclusivity through the appointment of several women as Supervisory Councillors and Special Advisers within his administration. He described the gesture as a practical example of empowering women and giving them opportunities to contribute to governance.
The programme attracted notable dignitaries, including the Lagos State APC Assistant Legal Adviser, Barr. Debola Ladigbolu; the Chairman of APC in Ikeja Local Government, Hon. Adebowale Adetoro; the APC LGA Secretary, Princess Obaseki; women leaders across Ikeja, market women associations, party faithful, and other distinguished guests.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment by participants to mobilize more women for voter registration, political participation, and leadership engagement, as stakeholders unanimously agreed that greater inclusion of women remains essential to building a more representative and progressive society.
The Women in Politics/Voters Registration Sensitization Programme further reflects the commitment of the Ikeja Local Government administration to promoting civic responsibility, inclusive governance, and empowering women as critical partners in the development of Ikeja.
