Those owing arrears of electricity bills may likely be in trouble over debts following what happened to a lady recently in Lagos.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the lady, Uchechi Nwokenobi, was arrested for failing to pay her accumulated bills.
The incident happened at Alhaji Adekunle Adelani Street in Ejigbo, Lagos, where she resided with other tenants.
It was gathered that Uchechi owed undisclosed arrears of electricity bill when the staff of the Ikeja Electric came to the area. They informed the residents that the defendant was owing huge accumulated bill and that they were instructed to disconnect all the houses in the area. Thus, the Ikeja Electric staff went round, massively disconnected the wires from the poles of various houses in the area and left.
Apart from that, the matter was reported to the police at Ejigbo Division and Uchechi was arrested. She was later charged before the Magistrates court sitting in Ejigbo, Lagos, for conduct likely to cause breach of public peace in the area.
She pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Inspector G. Simon, did not oppose her being granted bail and asked the court for adjournment for hearing.
Thus, the Presiding Magistrate, Mr. L.K.J. Layeni, granted her bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She was remanded in prison custody pending when she will perfect her bail.
The matter was adjourned till 13th August, 2018.
