Lagos Accelerates Work On International Airport Road

The Lagos State government on Monday commenced the removal of structures on the Right of Way to facilitate the upgrade and expansion of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road just as it gave assurance that all those affected by the demolition exercise across the State will be duly compensated.

A statement issued by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr. Rotimi Ogunleye said the Oshodi-International Airport Road expansion project is designed as a 10-lane highway, including a BRT lane as well as an interchange and flyover that will connect the local airport.

Ogunleye said that measures have been put in place to ensure that motorists and commuters do not experience undue inconvenience during the construction period as alternative routes which would be manned by LASTMA officials have been created.

According to the Commissioner, representatives of the State government have dialogued with all stakeholders affected by the demolition exercise along the Oshodi-Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road axis to secure their buy-in as part of the inclusive policy of this administration.

The Commissioner appealed to all those affected by the demolition exercise along the International Airport Road as well as other areas of the State to promptly submit their planning documents such as Certified Registered Title Document of Properties within the said Right of Way, Approved Building Plan Permit for the affected structures and any other relevant documents as proof of ownership to the Office of the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development at Block 15, The Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja to ensure the ease of processing payments.

“The Lagos State Government is sincere about payment of compensation to all those affected by demolition for road projects across the State. We have paid more than 90% in Mosafejo Oshodi, Abule Egba and Epe 1. We are presently paying Epe 2 and as for other areas such as Irede, Isawo, Igbogbo-Bayeku, Agege-Pen Cinema, Oyingbo and the Murtala Mohammed International Airport Road, we have started the compilation and very soon payments would be made”, Ogunleye said.

He appealed to Lagosians to bear with the State government during the period of reconstruction, explaining that the project is aimed at delivering a world-class road network befitting an international gateway into Nigeria through Lagos State.
