The Lagos State Health District III, in collaboration with the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, on Friday distributed food packs to expectant mothers as part of efforts to support maternal health and promote good nutrition during pregnancy.
Speaking at the event held at the Igbo-Efon Primary Health Centre, along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, the Permanent Secretary, Health District III, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke described the intervention as a nutrition boost, noting that pregnancy demands proper nutrition, and that whatever a mother eats directly affects the well-being and the growth of the unborn child.
“To all our expectant mothers, it is important to always bear in mind that proper nutrition helps prevent anaemia, ensures healthy birth weight, reduces complications during delivery and lays a solid foundation for the child’s future, especially in these challenging economic times,” she said.
She urged the beneficiaries to attend antenatal clinics regularly, take their routine drugs as prescribed, eat balanced diets, rest adequately, report danger signs promptly, and ensure delivery in health facilities under skilled birth attendants.
In his remarks, the Special Adviser on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, who was represented by the Director, Citizens Engagement, Dr. Omotayo Babatunde, noted that Maternal and Child Health remains a fundamental component of human capital development, emphasising that healthy pregnancy, safe delivery, adequate nutrition, immunisation and postnatal care are critical to building a healthier society.
He assured beneficiaries of the State Government’s commitment to their wellbeing and urged them to complement the support with regular antenatal care, exclusive breastfeeding, and timely immunisation at Primary Health Centres across the state.
Mrs. Victoria Akinwolemiwa, speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, expressed appreciation to the State Government for the gesture and assured that expectant mothers in the community would continue to adhere to the advice of health workers.a
