Lagos Students playing Ayo game at the ongoing 2 in 1 Traditional Sports Championships for Secondary Schools Students at the Campos Mini Stadium, Lagos Island
Secondary schools students in Lagos are currently competing in the 2-in-1 Traditional Sports Championships for students and adults athletes in Lagos.
The competitions which started on Wednesday at the Campos Mini Stadium, Lagos Island will end on Friday with no fewer than 200 students from 20 schools selected from five education districts in Lagos State taking part in the event organised by the Lagos State Traditional Sports Association with facilitating support from the Lagos State Sports Commission.
Head Coach of Traditional Sport (Ayo), Coach Ogundele Ojo said that secondary school students will be competing only in Ayo (traditional chess) and Abula (traditional volleyball). 100 adults athletes will be competing in Kokowa (traditional wrestling) as a competition, it will be a demonstration game for students to enable them understand and to stimulate their interest for the game of Kokowa.
As part of the championship on the final day, adults athletes for Ayo and Abula would compete in demonstration games, while the participating students watch the games to learn from them.
The association said that main objectives for staging the championship and the demonstration games by the adult athletes are to popularise the sports and to enable the Lagos State Traditional Sports Association to select athletes to participate in future youth and school sports championships.
In some of the results during the first day of the competition, Idi Araba High School, Mushin defeated Euba Secondary School, Mushin 2-1 in Abula boys’ event, while Sanni Blessing of Aunty Ayo Comprehensive High School, Ilorin beat Dorcas Onwenwunyi of Okesuna High School, Lagos Island 3-0 in Ayo game.
Medals, certificates of participation and educational gift items will be given to winners and participants during the final ceremony on Friday.
