The Lagos State Sports Commission has admonished schoolchildren to take an active part in physical activities and to see education as a panacea for redressing societal issues.

The Executive Chairman, Lagos State Sports Commission, Sola Aiyepeku said: “Break The Bias” means to change the mindset of people as to how they view the girl-child as there is nothing they can not do.

He made the statement on Monday at the opening ceremony heralding the One year Sports and Political Empowerment Programme tagged “Break the bias, She can” organised by APSE initiative in collaboration with the Lagos State Sports Commission, held at the Sports Bar, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere Lagos.

He said using Sports and Education to position the girl-child in society also falls in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos’ plan to break the bias of gender inequality. It is demonstrated in so many ways even on the Board of the Lagos State Sports Commission.

“Training the girl-child through the martial art and other disciplines of sports shows that the current administration cares so much about the children, adding that through action and not just talking about it”.

In his remarks, the Director General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Oluwatoyin Gafaar highlighted that Education is very fundamental as well as self-defence is highly required.

He noted that sports go hand-in-hand with education, no matter how good you are in physical activities, one must not suffer for the other.

“We do normally preach to people to take education very well because it’s very important. The chance you have in sports is between the age of 0-40 if you are lucky, after 35-40 what is left to you is your education,” he told the children.

Gafaar urged the participants to pay attention to what they taught them and the skills acquired, adding that it will remain useful to them in the days ahead but no matter what they do, education is highly important.
