A man, Olamilekan Yusuf has been arrested for allegedly committed three criminal offence of raping, impregnated a minor and attempted to procure an illegal abortion for a victim, a 14-year old girl (name withheld) in Ajegunle, Lagos.
He was already charged before a Lagos court for the alleged offence and remanded in prison custody.
The incident happened at Turner Eradiri street in Ajegunle where both the victim’s parents and the suspect reside in Lagos.
According to the residents who spoke to P.M.EXPRESS, Yusuf was secretly engaging in sex romp for sometime with the girl until he got her impregnated.
When the victim informed him of sudden change in her body, he reportedly took her to a laboratory for a test where it was discovered that she was pregnant.
In order to cover the shame and the crime, he then took her to an undisclosed place where he attempted to procure an abortion to terminate the pregnancy.
However, before they would carry out the abortion, the information leaked which prompted the victim to contact her parents and confessed what was happening to them.
The matter was reported to the police and Yusuf was arrested and taken to the police station where he also confessed.
He reportedly promised to take care of her and possibly marry her despite she was a minor.
Our correspondent learnt the police was in dilemma on how to charge Yusuf with a statutory rape and impregnated a minor which are serious offence because he was remorseful and the victim consented.
He was then charged with attempted to procure illegal abortion under the Criminal Code.
Yusuf pleaded not guilty.
The presiding Magistrate, Mr M.A. Etti granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He was remanded in prison pending when he will perfect the bail condition.
The matter was adjourned till 6 February 2017.
