The Imo State Governor, His Excellency Emeka Ihedioha, has harped on importance of sports as a viable tool for social development, unity and peace in the country.
Governor Ihedioha stated this at the kick-off of the inaugural football competition organized in his honour by Nnaemeka Anyanwu Foundation in Aboh Mbaise Council Area of the state, yesterday.
The Imo Governor, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, represented by the Council Interim Management Committee Chairman, Jonathan Onyeneke, said his administration is committed to uniting the state through sports and would invest hugely in the development of the sector across all levels in the state.
Ihedioha furthered that he would also employ sports to fight crimes in the state and urged the youths of the state to shun crime and join hands with his administration towards rebuilding the state.
Also speaking, the donor of the cup, Hon. Engr. Nnaemeka Eric Anyanwu, said he was inspired to organize the competition as a way to meaningfully engage the youths of the area especially during the festive season.
He expressed optimism that the competition would help to discover raw talents, export football talents beyond the shores of the state, encourage mutual relationship, among other things.
The competition which ends on 30th December, 2019, had 12 participatory teams drawn from the communities in the council area.
In the median match, the Mbutu Community defeated the Amuzu Community in a penalty kick to advance to the next level of the competition.
