Notable Niger Delta socio-cultural group, the Orashi National Congress (ONC), has congratulated Professor Princewill R. Chike on his appointment as the 10th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt (UniPort), describing it as a win for the Orashi region and Nigeria’s academic community.

The Governing Council of the University approved Professor Chike’s appointment as the next Vice-Chancellor at the 17th Governing Council meeting following what the council said was the successful conclusion of the selection process.

It was stated that the process was conducted in strict compliance with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act and the University of Port Harcourt Act. It involved the constitution of a Search Team and a Joint Council-Senate Selection Board, which carried out their responsibilities in accordance with extant laws and regulations governing the appointment of Vice-Chancellors in Nigerian universities.

Ambassador Emeni Ibe, JP, AP, President General of the Orashi National Congress, congratulated Professor Chike on behalf of the Congress. ONC described the appointment as well-deserved and expressed confidence in Professor Chike’s ability to provide “visionary leadership for the continued growth and development of the University”.

The leadership of the Orashi National Congress, ONC, extended their congratulations to the new VC wishing him the very best in office.

ONC, a socio-cultural body representing communities along the Orashi River basin, noted that UNIPORT plays a central role in training manpower for the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large. The Congress pledged support for the new administration’s efforts to advance research, teaching, and community engagement.

The press release stated that Professor Princewill R. Chike is expected to formally assume office as the 10th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt on 13th July, 2026.

The University of Port Harcourt, established in 1975, is one of Nigeria’s leading federal universities. The Vice-Chancellor is the chief academic and administrative officer, appointed by the Governing Council after a selection process involving the university community.
