MICHAEL AKINOLA
The notorious Ikanda Boys headed by a dreaded criminal, Ikechukwu Udensi, popularly known as Ikanda, yesterday attacked a businessman and killed him in broad daylight in Onitsha.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at the Bida Road axis of the popular Main market by the Central Mosque.
The businessman identified as Ndu Nwokolo a.k.a. Wazki, was said to be on a motorcycle popularly known as okada when the rider had an exchange of words with the leader of the group. He reportedly began to beat the rider and the businessman asked him why he was beating a man like him that way. He was said to have called his boys and they descended on Ndu. They battered him and hit him with all manner of things they could lay their hands on until he died.
Ndu Nwokolo murdered by Ikanda Boys
When they realised that he had died, they picked the gold jewelries on him, escaped in different directions for fear that the people could gather and attack them.
The killing of the businessman was said to have angered the traders; they closed all the markets around and started rioting. In the course of their demonstration, major streets and roads in Onitsha were blocked by the traders and residents which caused further panic.
P.M.EXPRESS had earlier reported the intimidation, extortion and loss of valuables suffered by the traders and residents in the hands of the dreaded hoodlums since their leader, Ikanda, was left off the hook by the operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad at Awkuzu.
Dreaded Ikanda
The Azia born Ikanda was said to have positioned his boys who monitored the business activities of the traders around the area and forced them to part with their valuables or money every evening when they closed for the day.
Traders and residents had complained that the security agencies appeared helpless and had been unable to properly address the menace of the hoodlums and the State government which had zero tolerance for criminal activities had not come to their aid yet. Many said that they were left to continue to nurse their suspicion that he had political godfathers as he often claimed.
