Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, ACTDA, has sacked a criminal hideout and hub for illicit drugs along the Enugu/Onitsha Old Road (ICC axis).
The rapidly growing “shanty town” served as a base for drug peddlers, criminals and unsettled herdsmen.
Recall that the agency had issued several warnings and done partial demolitions at the premises in the past year, and all to no avail, as these men kept growing in numbers and settling illegally at the location.
On Thursday, 7th March 2024, officials of the agency, demolished the premises, uncovered a large size of different types of illicit drugs and evacuated all the residents.
The lawful residents of the neighbourhood were filled with joy and encomiums for Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, for rescuing them; as these men had continued to constitute nuisance to the environment.
Some residents recounted how they had been robbed, their house burgled by the unidentifiable occupants of the “shanty town”. Some also narrated how their homes were invaded by cows as they flocked around the neighbourhood unchecked.
